Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between menopausal stages, psychological and health behavior factors, and depressive symptoms of middle-aged Korean women.
This cross sectional study investigated 1,638 middle-aged women visiting 16 KAHP health screening centers by self-administered questionnaires. Participants¡¯ menopausal status were categorized into premenopause, early/late perimenopause, and early/late postmenopause based on the stages of reproductive aging workshop(STRAW) paradigm. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), the Korean version for Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument(BEPSI-K) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) were used to assess women¡¯s depressive symptoms, stress and trait anxiety. Health behaviors such as eating, physical activity, alcohol use and quality of sleep were also measured.
High levels of depressive symptoms were present in 13.98% of middle-aged women. Multivariate logistic model suggested that high levels of depressive symptoms were significantly associated with poor perceived health status(OR=2.49, p<.05), higher level of stress(OR=4.37, p<.001) and trait anxiety(OR=11.16, p<.001), fair eating habits(OR=1.64, p<.05), frequent alcohol drinking(OR=2.43, p<.05), and poor quality of sleep(OR=3.77, p<.001).
This study suggested health promotion strategies for middle-aged women should incorporate stress/anxiety management and health behavior practices to prevent and manage depressive symptoms
